C.O.U.R.R.A.G.E. is a collective narrative therapy methodology that has been developed to privilege the second or alternative stories of women who have faced hardships and trauma.

It seeks to honour the strengths and skills women show and use in the face of pain and grief. The name of the methodology has been inspired by women themselves who have described the central theme and thread that runs through their stories as ‘courage’. The methodology draws significantly from the work and projects of Linda Tuhiwai Smith (2012). These projects were incorporated into the COURRAGE methodology and adapted to suit the context, culture and the hopes that the women expressed.

Although the methodology has been developed in partnership with women for women, it can be adapted and used in broader community contexts to support indigenous people to cope with the hardships that they face and to develop agency which can support them to take steps to realise their hopes and dreams.

In this 3-hour introductory workshop together we will learn about:

  • the history of the COURRAGE methodology
  • narrative ideas that inform COURRAGE
  • the Imbeleko approach to therapeutic practice

This training will also include experiential learning activities and impactful videos for deeper understanding.

About the presenter

Ncazelo Ncube-Mlilo is an internationally renowned psychologist and narrative therapist based in Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2015 Ncazelo established PHOLA, an organisation dedicated to providing culturally-sensitive therapies to those affected by trauma, violence and abuse. At the heart of the organisation’s work is the commitment to facilitating healing and recovery, assisting those affected to live the lives they want, and enabling them to both claim their rights and become agents of social change, within their own lives, their families, and their communities. Under Ncazelo’s dynamic leadership, PHOLA continues to exponentially transform the lives of children, adults, and whole communities dealing with severe trauma and deprivation. This has included establishing a respite home/safe house for women and children experiencing significant abuse.

Her leadership has earned global recognition: in April 2025 she won the People’s Choice Award for Non-Profit and Social Enterprise, the Women in Therapy and Counselling Services Award, and was runner-up for the Golden Heart Award at the Women Changing the World Awards in London. She will also host the Women Changing the World Global Awards – South Africa.

This program will be relevant for a diversity of service providers including counsellors, therapists, community workers, and mental health practitioners working in settings such as victim and crisis services, private practice, hospitals, women’s shelters, sexual assault centers, schools, Violence Against Women (VAW) organizations, and other community-based and social service agencies. This workshop will be particularly relevant to those working with women who are reclaiming their lives from the effects of violence.
