People suffering from the ongoing traumatic effects of sexualized violence (self-blame, worthlessness, self-hate and more) often experience a diminished sense of agency. We may hear statements such as ‘There was nothing I could do to stop the sexual assault’ or ‘I’m messed up from my childhood sexual abuse.’

Narrative Therapy approaches assist people in reclaiming their lives from the effects of sexualized violence and suggest that there is always another story. These are often subordinated stories of skills in living and the many unacknowledged ways in which people respond. There are also stories of small acts of resistance that we can be on the lookout for. These acts of protest and refusal are not necessarily grand or overt actions, but more often are hardly visible. Moreover, what might seem an ever-so-small form of resistance may not only be significant, but also can elevate personal agency.

During this one-day in-person training together we will:

  • review the ideas that shape Narrative Therapy
  • explore the taken-for-granted understandings of trauma and PTSD
  • offer ways to engage in conversations about the trauma of sexual violence that are not retraumatizing
  • learn and co-create questions that can be asked to elicit a person’s responses to sexual violence
  • discuss and co-discover how it is possible to elicit descriptions and render meaning to small acts of resistance.

Multiple modes of learning will be used to facilitate this workshop including practice-based narrative exercises, video and wider discussion.
