Workshop includes two breaks (15 minutes and 45 minutes)

Since Michael White’s 1988 paper—“Saying hullo again: The incorporation of the lost relationship in the resolution of grief”—narrative therapists have been thinking about ways to work with the experience of grief and loss. White’s idea that a relationship does not have to end with the death of a person has infused hope into working with grief. Moreover, this notion has helped people continue to claim ways they have known themselves through relationships, even though those relationships are no longer physically available. One person described this experience as facilitating a shift from what she lost when her partner died to what she gained throughout the relationship.

In this workshop we will study re-membering, the practice Michael White developed, as well as other ways to help people experiencing loss and grief. These will include:

  • witnessing people’s experience
  • facilitating an audience
  • creating useful shifts in focus
  • considering what may be sustaining for particular people.

This will be a practical workshop, rich with examples and therapy ideas. The workshop will include a videotape example, exercises to try out some of the ideas, and discussion.
