on March 4, 2026 titled 'Responding to Trauma: Double-storied Accounts'

I have found that discovering people’s multiple responses to trauma has been most helpful in providing them with an alternative and safe territory of identity to stand in. In this context, space is opened up to speak about the unspeakable … that is, if the person themselves so wishes.

(Yuen, 2009. p. 14)

Narrative Therapy approaches assist people in reclaiming their lives from the effects of trauma and suggest that there is always another story. These are often subordinated stories of connection, hope, cherished values, acts of resistance, skills in living and the many unacknowledged ways in which people respond to hardship.

In this one-day workshop narrative ideas and practices will be shared that assist in elevating agency, resistance and responses.

This training will:

  •  provide an overview of the ideas that shape Narrative Therapy
  • explore the taken-for-granted understandings of trauma and PTSD
  • challenge the ‘no pain no gain’ trauma healing discourse
  • offer ways to engage in conversations about trauma that are not retraumatizing
  • offer questions to co-discover people’s responses and acts of resistance to violence and oppression

Participation and engagement will be possible via exercises in breakout rooms and wider discussion.
