TREE OF LIFE is an approach to counselling developed by Ncazelo Ncube-Mlilo in collaboration with David Denborough to support children affected by HIV and AIDS. The methodology is now used in mental health and psychosocial services in different parts of the world and with people of all ages. It helps people to talk about the stories of their lives in ways that make them stronger. It focuses on the second stories of people’s lives (stories of hopes, values, dreams, commitments, skills and knowledges and more) which give people hope and encouragement and support them to tackle the problems of life.

The Tree of Life narrative approach has proved so successful and popular that it is now being used with children, young people, and adults in a wide range of countries across Africa, and also in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Russia, Nepal, the USA, and elsewhere.

Visit the Dulwich Centre website here to see how Tree of Life is being implemented around the world.

About the presenter…

Ncazelo Ncube-Mlilo is the pioneer and co-developer of the Tree of Life methodology. Since developing the Tree of Life in 2006 Ncazelo has continued to expand her work to create culturally sensitive therapies to support people who have experienced significant hardships. She has worked extensively as a Senior Programmes Manager leading the implementation of child focused strategies and interventions in East and Southern Africa. In 2016 Ncazelo founded Phola, an organization which supports children, women, families and communities affected by trauma related to poverty, loss, violence, HIV and AIDS, statelessness, conflict and more. Phola work is largely founded upon Narrative Therapy and Imbeleko principles that seek to centre the knowledges and skills of those who are affected by problems. Ncazelo has presented her work and ideas in several countries around the world.
