I appreciated all of the outsider witness letters and collages. It is meaningful that my son’s story [who died from homicide] and my story are being used in such a powerful way. I will be keeping every single one of the responses for my granddaughter…my son’s daughter.

When I viewed the video links of the outsider witness responses … the replay was so affirming! Thank you for the opportunity to meet my brother [who was lost to violence] through me.

Being an outsider witness to someone who lost their family member to homicide has me thinking more about action I can take in my work as a counsellor – actions to address violence in our communities.

Quotes after definitional ceremonies with people who have lost a loved one to violence.

This workshop will be of interest to narrative practitioners working alongside people who have lost someone to violence, and also anyone interested in using definitional ceremony in their work.

During our day together we will:

  • Learn about the history and politics of reflecting teamwork as definitional ceremony (White, 1995 & 2000)  and the practice of outsider witnessing
  • View a video interview of a young woman who lost her brother to violence followed by outsider witness responses

  • Practice outsider witnessing in breakout groups
  • Learn about different creative outsider witness modes – i.e. using video, writing outsider witness letters, sharing sticky-note messages, art and more.
  • Discuss how it is possible to easily bring and incorporate definitional ceremony and outsider witness practices into our work with individuals, groups and communities

This workshop will be suited to those who are not-yet-familiar with (or would like a refresher to) the history and influence of definitional ceremony and the narrative practice of outsider witnessing.
