Event Description

$140 after June 21, 2026

This workshop will be a practical, moving and hopeful exploration of ways of working with the often intense and frequently difficult problems of suicidal experience and despair. Using principals and practices drawn from narrative therapy, the day will be a combination of lectures, the sharing of hopeful work, discussion and the opportunity to practice some of the ideas.

During this full-day workshop we will:

  • Learn principles from narrative practice that are particularly relevant when working around suicidal experience and despair
  • go beyond risk assessments and find ways to build life-saving stories with those struggling with despair or suicidal experience.
  • learn ways to use the narrative practice of externalising when working with suicidal experience and despair
  • consider ‘discourses’ or ‘common understandings’ of suicidal experience and how to develop awareness of this in our work
  • discuss the role power can play in shaping what language is used when speaking about suicidal experience and despair
  • learn about the concept of ‘joining people in sadness’ in order to build collaboration
