Narrative Therapy Approaches to Addictions
2-days facilitated by Dale Andersen-Giberson
10:30 AM to 3:30 PM ET | Convert to your time zone here
Work with substance use, video game problems and other areas of addiction can bring up a plethora of difficult questions for therapists, counsellors and other human action workers who are trying to facilitate change with consumers. How can I work with the 12 step models in the therapy room? How can I focus conversations for people actively using substances and for those who are working toward relapse prevention in ways that respect the dignity and life experiences of consumers? How can I move with and beyond current models of addictions treatment in ways that address my and my client’s social and political environment?
This two-day workshop will work to facilitate conversations and teachings about narrative therapy and the possibilities it offers for addictions work. Narrative therapy will be described in accessible ways and tangible, real life ideas will be presented that can be applied immediately to practice. The workshop will cover both challenges with substance use and challenges with video gaming and explore individual and collective methods of facilitating change with both young people and adults.
Workshop members will:
– Be introduced to different ways of externalizing substances/gambling/gaming.
– Explore different ways of working with biological understandings of addiction.
– Explore different ways of working with people who prefer the 12 step ideas.
– Look at narrative conversations in scaffolding with people who are working through all different types of change (pre-contemplating change, contemplating change, maintaining change etc.).
– Look at ways of using documents with individuals and groups of people and ways of disseminating consumer skills and knowledge to other consumers.
The workshop will use the Zoom platform and make participation and engagement possible through chat and breakout rooms.
