The cloud of depression makes me exhausted. I could sleep all the time. I can’t describe it …it’s like a crushing fatigue. Depression has me always thinking, where is my life going?

  (N. 40 years old)

Depression is complete darkness. It tells me everyone is going to turn on me because I’m worthless. It tells me ‘You are so far gone!’ It makes me not want to get out of bed and gives me this overwhelming sense that I will never be happy at all…

  (Amy 15 years old)

Depression is well known for diminishing hope and obscuring preferred identity stories for persons of all ages. A Narrative Therapy approach offers effective and helpful skills and practices for elevating hope when working with stories of depression.

In this online workshop together we will…

  • have a brief learning/refresher about the ideas that shape Narrative Therapy
  • engage in the narrative practice of externalizing – to separate the person from depression and also deconstruct stories of depression
  • practice generating questions that thicken subordinated stories
  • consider the socio-political and cultural contexts of people’s lives
  • practice discovering and exploring unique outcomes – finding a ‘crack’ in the story of depression and hopelessness

Participation and engagement will be possible via exercises in breakout rooms and wider discussion.
