The phrase “client as consultant” is often heard in social work circles as a way to indicate an ethic of inclusion, empowerment and respect for the people we work with. In practice this ethic often becomes little more than lip service. Ruth and Natasha’s presentation on their work with youth showed us how we truly can live out the ideals of treating youth as consultants about real issues, They inspired me by the way they were able to elicit meaningful, respectful communication between workers and young people.
